There are several many reasons why your car battery might stop functioning suddenly. It could be because you left the lights on or perhaps there are hidden power drains within the vehicle. At times, loose connections and corrosion could lead to these issues as well! Your car battery could also die if you park it for too long.

Limiting short trips

The thing with quick car rides is that they do not let your battery charge fully. One of the best ways to maintain the battery power of your car is to go on long drives from time to time. You may also think of buying a portable battery charger that will jump-start your car’s engine without the necessity of getting help from another car in case you are ever stranded.

Keeping your battery tightly fastened

If the battery is not fastened safely it will vibrate and this can lead to issues such as short circuits and internal damage. This is why you must get the battery terminal checked regularly. This is especially so when you are driving on bumpy roads. Make sure that the battery is secured tightly in the mounting bracket.

Turning off all the lights when you get out of the car

If you leave the car’s interior lights or the headlights on after you have left it, it will drain the battery. So, if you tend to forget these things, post a reminder on your dashboard. You can also try parking in a direction where you must walk past your headlights to reach your destination.

Controlling the corrosion

It is important to clean all corrosive buildup from the battery terminals to make sure that the battery enjoys a long lifespan. You can use a toothbrush or cloth dipped in a mixture of water and baking soda to clean off the corrosion. After that, rinse off the mixture by using a spray bottle full of cold water and clean it thoroughly with a dry cloth. Just make sure that you do not inhale the poison.

Testing the battery often enough

It is very important to get the voltage output level of the car battery tested regularly with a tester to make sure you can monitor how well the battery is being maintained by you. Doing this will also help you find out if you need to replace the battery or not.

Not using electronics while the engine is off

When you are not driving the car make sure that you have turned off all devices and gadgets in your car that might drain the battery such as the sound system, air conditioner, etc. On the flip side, also remember that if there is too much downtime the car battery might get worn down.

You need to be prompt in dealing with the issues that your car battery might suffer from – in fact, prevention is always better than cure in these particular cases. However, if you follow the tips we have enumerated over here your battery will last surprisingly long.
